Castel Sant'Angelo or Mausoleum of Hadrian was built between 130 and 139 AD and is located on the right bank of the Tiber, not far from the Vatican, to which it is connected by means of the “passetto,” a fortified corridor.
It was transformed into a fortress during the 6th century and named castellum.
The name was associated with it after the plague of 590, when the archangel Michael appeared on its summit.
Radically modified in medieval and Renaissance times, it was a place of extreme defense for the popes.
Walls and ramparts were added and it assumed the status of a luxurious papal residence.
It was turned into a political prison in the 17th century.
Since 1925 it has been a National Museum, among the most visited in Italy, and divided into 7 levels:

• Levels 1, 2 and 3: This is where the mausoleum is developed. On level 3 grain and oil stores were arranged in medieval times. Below the courtyard historical prisons were created;
• Fortified castle: this is the level 2 fortification, modified repeatedly between the 4th and 17th centuries and finally also during the 20th century. The patrol walkway between the ramparts named after the four evangelists is passable;
• Level 4: pontifical apartments. With the Angel Courtyard, courtyard and chapel of Leo X;
• Level 5: pontifical apartments. With the best preserved and most sumptuous Renaissance rooms. These are the apartments of Paul III Farnese, with rooms frescoed by Perin del Vaga;
• Level 6: pontifical apartments. With library, treasury hall, festoon hall, Adrianeo hall, Cagliostra hall;
• Level 7: pontifical apartments. With rooms designed to house archives, rotunda room and column room.

Works in the Castel Sant'Angelo Museum include:

• Lorenzo Lotto's Saint Jerome Penitent;
• Christ Blessing and Saint Onofrio by Carlo Crivelli;
• Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints Ambrose, John the Baptist, Peter, Victor, Benedict, and Anthony Abbot by Ambrogio Zavattari.

The museum can be visited, upon purchase of tickets, Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. 
It is closed on Mondays, December 25 and January 1.
